Check out these co-op-sponsored programs for youth:
Michigan Electric TEEN DAYS is a 3-day camp that teaches high school students about electricity and rural electric cooperatives. There are a lot of fun activities and a chance to meet other teens from around the state.
The Rural Electric YOUTH TOUR to Washington, D.C. brings students from across the country together to tour the city while learning more about electric cooperatives, American history and U.S. government. Students will have the opportunity to meet their legislators.
Students attending the Rural Electric Youth Tour will also have the opportunity to be elected to represent Michigan on the YOUTH LEADERSHIP COUNCIL (YLC). One representative from each state is selected during Youth Tour. The YLC is designed to provide delegates with stronger leadership and public speaking skills, and to enhance their knowledge of the energy industry and the cooperative form of business. Members attend the NRECA Youth Leadership Conference in July, the NRECA Annual Meeting in February, and they may be asked to speak before their co-op and at the MECA Annual Meeting. The Michigan Electric Co-op Association also awards SCHOLARSHIPS to qualifying youth applicants who wish to pursue a course which will enable him/her to be more actively involved in the programs of the local electric cooperative.
