Small town and rural high school teachers are welcome to apply for the free trip to Washington, D.C! Teachers do not have to be co-op members; however, their school or home must be in or near a Michigan electric co-op’s service area.

Some teachers have said they didn’t apply for this excellent learning opportunity because “it sounds too good to be true.” It is good, but it’s also true…Up to two teachers may be selected based on a formal application and their ideas for teaching about cooperatives in their classes. In return, teachers are asked to use their experience in their curriculum and incorporate a lesson on the co-op way of doing business.

Kathy Johnson, right, traveled with the Michigan Youth Tour delegation to Washington, D.C. as a teacher guest in 2005 (made possible by a grant from the Cooperative Finance Corporation). Johnson is a high school math teacher in Traverse City.
